Weekdays for Children

All children’s and youth work in Crown comes under the umbrella of the Safeguarding Policy of the Church of Scotland, this holding out a safe and happy environment for activities.

The newest weekday activity for young people is CNX@Crown, a youth club which meets on a Saturday night. In the earlier part of the evening (6.30-8 pm), P7 and S1 young people can enjoy a range of activities and opportunities for socialising; from 8.15 till 10 pm, an older age group comes in, from S2 and S3. There is a modest nightly charge to cover costs.

Two uniformed organisations are based in the church halls. On a Tuesday girls take part in Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, and on a Friday boys take part in Anchor Boys, Junior Section and the Company Section of the Boys’ Brigade. These are flourishing companies, ably led and to an extent bursting at the seams in terms of membership!

We also are glad to encourage Scottish Country Dancing (Wednesdays). In addition, regularly in the Halls we have Parent & Toddler groups (Wednesday and Thursday); and on Saturdays we have a regular letting arrangement with Theatre FX.

Our contacts with local schools and other youth organisations are well developed. For the local Crown Primary School, where the Minister is the Chaplain, we have set up a very popular after-school club, “Crown Corner Club”.  We have strong contacts also with Millburn Academy. And there are two local Scout troops, Crown and Kingsmills, the former originally set up by the church but nowadays meeting in its own premises.

Fairly recently a Junior Band was started – a group for younger instrumentalists and singers who might enhance the worship of the church (and of Café Church). It rehearses usually on a Sunday evening, but not every week, and there is always a warm welcome for newcomers. Current participants play guitars, flute, percussion, keyboard and sing.

The Crown Church Band, mostly for adults, is a wind and brass group which rehearses on a Monday evening, but on occasion has been delighted to welcome younger members. Instruments can be loaned, and tuition given. This Band plays frequently outside the church walls, in all sorts of community settings.
